The Meaning Behind Scarborough
Many admit that while they live in the city of Scarborough few of them know the actual meaning behind the name of their city of residence. Scarborough, which makes up the eastern area of the city of Toronto, was named by Elizabeth Simcoe who one day sailed by the bluffs and thought the area reminded her of Scarborough in England. Ms. Simcoe was the wife of Lord Simcoe who being Ontario’s first lieutenant minister has the August civic holiday named after him. Today the city boasts a diverse culture and is often the first home of many immigrants to the Toronto area. Those lucky enough to call Scarborough home can enjoy the Scarborough Bluffs, the Rouge River Valley and Highland Creek. Hopefully those old and new to the area can also know the meaning behind the name of their city as well.
